Kameyama
A moment to unwind in the city.
In Saiin, Kyoto, Kameyama is a neighborhood confectionery cherished for its house-strained smooth bean paste, kinako ohagi, and an evolving calendar of seasonal sweets from spring kashiwamochi to autumn kurimochi.
01 / ABOUT THE PLACE
Set one street west of Nishi-Oji-dori, Kameyama is marked by an old-fashioned, unpretentious display case. The ohagi catching the eye out front are pleasantly petite, making them easy to pick up on impulse; the kinako ohagi in particular offers a comforting balance between fragrant toasted soybean flour and moderately sweet bean paste. The shop strains its own smooth koshian paste with a slightly drier finish, letting the natural character of the azuki beans come through with an understated sweetness.
Alongside year-round staples such as three-color dango skewers and rustic inaka manju, the counter shifts with the seasons. Early spring brings sakura mochi with a lingering touch of salt and bamboo-leaf-wrapped chimaki, followed in early summer by kashiwamochi—its pleasantly firm-chewy mochi dough wrapping smooth koshian, sweet miso bean paste, or mugwort-scented dough with chunky tsubuan. As the weather warms, triangular minazuki and sweet-dough waka-ayu appear, heralded by a banner beneath the eaves, before autumn yields kurimochi chestnut rice cakes that regulars reportedly return to buy week after week. Each visit brings a simple treat attuned to the time of year.
It is the kind of approachable neighborhood shop where you can easily drop by on a stroll or on the way back from shopping, picking up a wrapped parcel for afternoon tea.
